Sewing Inspiration: 1940's Sailor Dresses

I found some lovely photographs taken by Alfred Eisenstaedt for LIFE magazine of sailor dresses from the 1940's.  Aren't they lovely?!  (The top image is my favorite!)
These pictures make me feel like sewing summer dresses!

Sunday Evening Fellowship

We enjoyed a joyful evening of singing and visiting at the monthly Sunday Evening Fellowship which was held yesterday at Mrs. S's home!  (She is second from the right in the above photo.)

The quilt Mrs. S made from her husband's blue jeans and one of his shirts.

Mrs. S. has a large collection of John Wayne memorabilia.  Before he left, Pastor asked me to take a picture of him sharing the gospel with John Wayne. ;-) Pastor is 81 years old and is a very sweet man with a fun sense of humor!

Well Soaked

"Am I learning how to use my Bible? The way to become complete for the Master’s service is to be well soaked in the Bible; some of us only exploit certain passages. Our Lord wants to give us continuous instruction out of His word; continuous instruction turns hearers into disciples."

Homemade Wheat Thins

These crackers are delicious and simple to make! The directions say to make these in a bowl, but I've been using the food processor which makes the mixing-up time faster and easier.
Enjoy!!

Homemade Wheat Thins

  • 1 1/4 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt, plus extra for sprinkling
  • 1/4 teaspoon paprika
  • 4 tablespoons butter, cold
  • 1/4 cup water (plus more, if necessary)
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla
In a bowl mix together flour, sugar, salt and paprika. Using a regular sized cheese grater, grate butter into flour mixture (or cut in with pastry cutter or knives). Immediately toss butter in flour mixture to coat, breaking up pieces a bit more as you go.

Mix together water and vanilla. Pour over flour mixture and mix until evenly moistened and the dough comes together but is not sticky (add a bit more water if necessary). Divide the mixture in half and form into balls.

On a lightly floured counter, roll out the dough as thinly as possible (or as desired). Cut into squares and place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Sprinkle with a bit of salt (and other toppings if desired).

Bake at 400ยบ F for 8-10 minutes or until browned and crisp. Cool completely and store in an air-tight container or bag at room temperature.

Makes approximately: 60 crackers (depending on the size and shape you make them)

The Courage to Stand Alone

The photo was taken in Hamburg in 1936, during the celebrations for the launch of a ship. In the crowed, one person refuses to raise his arm to give the Nazi salute. The man was August Landmesser. He had already been in trouble with the authorities, having been sentenced to two years hard labour for marrying a Jewish woman.

We know little else about August Landmesser, except that he had two children. One of his children recognized her father in this photo when it was published in a German newspaper in 1991. How proud she must have been in that moment.

Forever...

"Forever, O LORD, Your word is settled in heaven.
Your faithfulness endures to all generations;
You established the earth, and it abides.

They continue this day according to Your ordinances,
For all are Your servants.
Unless Your law had been my delight,
I would then have perished in my affliction.
I will never forget Your precepts,
For by them You have given me life."

~ Psalm 119:89-93

Ladies Tea!

Several ladies from church came for a tea this morning and each brought a food that has a family history to it and a Bible verse to share. We had such a nice time together sharing encouragements from scripture, visiting, and eating yummy homemade foods!

Frost and Mist

Views out our windows yesterday.
I love it when the tree branches are covered with frost, and the air over the marsh is misty.

Early Rising

{photo from Pinterest}

"The difference between rising every morning at six and at eight, in the course of forty years, amounts to twenty thousand hours,--or eight years, one hundred and twenty days, and ten hours,--which will afford eight hours a day, for exactly ten years; so that it is the same as if ten years of life were added, in which we could command eight hours each day for the cultivation of the mind."
~ Rev. Daniel Smith (1851)
